Its February; a time when we could all use...

Hello everyone!

Its February; a time when we could all use some inspiration and collaboration!

I am curious to hear about different reading programs that you are using at your schools. As reading specialists, we have a wealth of knowledge and work with a strong research base. Yet often we have to work with whatever programs that the district chooses. How do we deal with implementing programs at a district level or school wide level? I like what Mary Clare said about not being isolated, and how there could be some discussion on this issue.

I am currently not working as a reading specialist, but most of my job involves using my skills as a reading specialist. I am a SIOP coach in the Lower Kuskokwim School District. I enjoy my work with teachers and implementing the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol. I feel that most of SIOP integrates best practices in teaching a second language as well as all the basic literacy skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. I have been working on implementing science notebooks and helping teachers teach 6 traits writing lessons based on feedback from the district writing assessment. I have seen a lot of improvements in students´ writing and teachers have given me good feedback on the improvements they see as they implement additional language learning strategies.

Is any one attending the Bilingual and Multicultural Educational conference in Anchorage in April? I hope there could be some renewed interest in this blog that Mary Clare set up for reading specialists.

I would like to hear from all of you.
Maria

If you know of other people who are reading specialists or just particularly interested in reading instruction, send me their email address and I will add them as an author. There is a limit of 100 authors, but if we reach our limit, we'll figure out something else!!

If you want to start a new post, go up to the top right hand corner and click on "New Post" If it says you aren't an author, let me know and send me your location and your email address, and I can make you an author.

Thanks for joining us!

Let's Begin

I am hoping that this will become a site for Reading Specialists from Alaska to share their victories, their challenges, good research they have found, etc. and keep in touch with each other. We shouldn't be isolated. We should be united and working together for the best reading and writing instruction for Alaska's K-12 students.

What is happening in your district?
